About the exhibition:

Over the last few years, Élène Gamache's pictorial world has consisted of large flower bouquets, which at times were juxtaposed with a landscape within a single painting. For this exhibition the artist revisited these two subject matters, flowers and landscapes; however, she composed works with the themes being independent of one another, each with their own vitality, their own energy.

Through her portrayal of landscapes, we may become so intensely caught up in the painting that we may wish to wander through the depicted scenery. In this calm and contemplative space, light is used to enhance the richness of the turquoise, saffron and vermillion colours, as well as the shades of green that make up the foliage. This light also accentuates the shimmering and glistening effect of the water. In the flower paintings, the large bouquets are lush, colourful and alive. The gestures used become increasingly freer. Whether it is through the representation of landscapes or flowers, Élène's pictorial world is marked by her experiences, sensations and emotions.

About the artist:

Élène Gamache was born in Quebec in 1951. She studied at the École des Beaux Arts de Québec from 1967 to 1971, and later obtained her BA in visual arts and her teaching certificate from Université Laval. She also studied at the Banff School of Fine Arts (now the Banff Centre) in Alberta. Élène travels as often as she can, taking in all the light and colour of the places she visits. She has spent time in New Mexico and Arizona, but it seems that Italy has been the greatest source of inspiration for the artist. Élène’s work can be found in many museum and corporate collections. Her work is shown in galleries from Montreal, Quebec City and Ottawa, to Toronto, Edmonton and Victoria.
