John Cage    Feb 3 - Mar 31, 2012

Crown Point Press is pleased to announce an exhibition featuring the prints of artist and composer John Cage, the first in a series of shows celebrating our 50th anniversary.

Cage's first print project at Crown Point Press was in 1978, and he worked at the press almost every year during the last 15 years of his life. He died in 1992 at the age of 79. His prints are among the most beautiful and technically complicated Crown Point has ever published. The exhibition will include a selection of over 20 of his etchings, as well as the maps and scores he used to create them. The show provides a rare glimpse into John Cage's printmaking process and his overall approach to both his art and his music. View a selection of prints from the exhibition here.

John Cage's body of work in visual art is entirely works on paper: watercolors and drawings as well as the prints he made at Crown Point Press. His drawings and watercolors grew out of his work with etching. Cage's visual art is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Frankfurter Kunstverein, Germany. He was included in the Carnegie International, Pittsburgh, in 1991 and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art mounted a one-person tribute to his visual art in 1992. Solo Cage exhibitions were presented at the Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany (1978), the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1982), the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. (1987), California Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco (2000), and a traveling exhibition organized by the Hayward Gallery, London (2010-11).
