Crown Point Press announces a new portfolio of etchings by Ed Ruscha, which is shown concurrently with a group exhibition titled California Impressions that extends across the street to a public artwork.

Ed Ruscha continues to pursue his longtime attraction to car culture and life on the road with a new portfolio of seven etchings titled Motor City. To draw the images Ruscha used a tool called a pantograph, scratching lines directly onto copper plates. He added color with aquatint, creating vintage car emblems including Bel Air, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Chrysler Plymouth, Ford, and Ford Crestliner. The prints are delicate and look nostalgically hand-made. They are presented in a portfolio that resembles a training manual. To view images click here.

California Impressions includes prints by Robert Bechtle, William Brice, Brad Brown, Richard Diebenkorn, Robert Hudson, Tom Marioni, Susan Middleton, Nathan Oliveira, Gay Outlaw, Laurie Reid and Wayne Thiebaud. Sculptor Robert Hudson, who exemplifies the creative spirit of the West Coast and is often associated with the Funk Art Movement of the 1960’s, is featured. In addition to three etchings on view in the gallery, his large-scale public art work titled Landmark is newly installed on the east façade of the condominium tower One Hawthorne, across the street from Crown Point Press. Landmark is a 16-story vertical mural created from 30 x 20-inch color drawings that were accurately reproduced using a photographic imaging process and printed onto porcelain enamel tiles by KVO Industries. The work was commissioned by Jackson Pacific Ventures and managed by Crown Point Press director, Valerie Wade.
