James Verbicky collages strips of retro and contemporary advertising logos from magazines and newspapers with resin to form a textured plateau of text and color. His glossy paintings are reminiscent of both vintage advertising memorabilia and the work of Jacques de la Villegle´, the French artist who collages torn street posters onto canvas. In his process of 'binding fragments of vintage media to one another' he double-exposes language and image. An earlier ongoing series of abstract expressionist paintings were described by critic Peter Frank as 'suggesting impossible, intangible places'. Last year, his works were auctioned at Sotheby's, where they did notably well. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1973, Verbicky was elected for a 110 yearold juried exhibition at the Louvre, in Paris, France with the Societie Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
