Brazilian born, California artist Deladier Almeida is presented for the first time at Caldwell Snyder
Gallery, San Francisco. Highlighting the range of his work, the exhibition will feature his celebrated
landscape paintings and his intimate still lifes, which evoke the Bay Area tradition of thick impasto oil
painting. Trained by renowned artist Wayne Thiebaud and Roland Peterson at UC Davis in the
1980’s, Almeida’s work marries the restrained quality of Wayne Thiebaud’s sleek style with
Peterson’s more gestural brushwork, inspired and embraced by other Bay Area artists including
David Park, Elmer Bischoff, and Richard Diebenkorn.
With a rich and distinctive palette and luscious brushwork, Almeida is exhilirated by views of the
central valley at dusk and dawn. His images of California’s varied terrain, depicted from a bird’s-eye
view are achieved from his adventures flying over regions of the state in helicopters or small planes.
The result is that each painting is alive with texture and movement.
According to Almeida, his “formal compositions are conflations of various scenes. Elements of those
scenes are combined and aligned to an underlying grid and each composition evolves from simple
geometric themes built into its grid.”
Painting quickly, with an emphasis on improvised brushwork, Almeida captures the sense of traveling
over the earth, geometric shapes of productive land passing in a mesmerizing array of shapes and
“The way my painting comes out is a function of the way I attack it,” he has said, adding, “I have to
work on the edge of my rational mind. The resulting compositions are both designed and allowed to
develop on their own. The use of pictorial devices such as geometric thrust, aerial perspective,
rhythmic punctuation, value distribution, edge management and texture variation are mechanisms I
apply locally. The extent to which these devices are used in each piece gives them their individual
character. Staying true to these principles and applying them judiciously results in a coherent group of
works, made up of pieces that stand on their own.”
Almeida has lived in California since the mid-1980s. He has exhibited his work at galleries, museums,
and art fairs including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the John Natsoulas Center for the
Arts in Davis, and the Bennington Center for the Arts, Vermont.
