Biography

Timeline

1942
Born in Ouidah, Rep. of Benin
1968 - 1971
Studied law and business administration in France
1971 - 1993
As the eldest son forced by his family to return to Benin upon his father’s death, Adeagbo was declared as mentally instable during a long lasting dispute over the heritage. During 23 years of isolation and poverty, Adeagbo developed far from the Western Art world his unique visual language composing stories with found objects and his handwritten texts. In 1993, by incident a French curator traveling in Western Africa saw his work in his courtyard and triggered the first invitations to show in Europe.
1999
Award of the 48th Venice Biennial for the one day installation on the Campo Arsenale „The Story of the Lion“, a project sponsored and produced by jointadventures.org
