1934 - 1937 Studies at University of California, Berkeley; Stanford University; California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco; Rudolf Schaefer School of Design, San Francisco
1942 Begins career as art critic, then film critic for The New Republic. In the following three decades writes for The Nation, Time, Commentary, The New Leader, Cavalier Film Comment, and Artforum.
