Galerie Guy Bärtschi is proud to announce for the second time, its participation in the The Armory Show New York.
For this occasion, we will display a pertinent choice of recent works from the gallery’s artists:
Marina Abramović, Wim Delvoye, Fabrice Gygi, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Tom Molloy and Giuseppe Penone.
Following Galerie Guy Bärtschi’s concept of displaying simultaneously both established artistic positions and favouring projects
by emerging artists working with new media: we are happy to present a confrontation between diverse strong artistic positions at
The Armory Show.
Marina Abramović’s work oscillates between a personal research for emotional understanding of what it means to be a human
being and the context of war and fear like in the project realized with a group of children in Laos. Entirely produced by the
gallery and entitled 8 Lessons on Emptiness with a Happy End. At The Armory Show, we are happy to present her new work
“Happy Christmas”.
Known for his surprising works often inspired by an art-historical or social context, Wim Delvoye has realized the 14 Stations of
the Cross using X-Rays. However, this time his actors are – mice. By doing so, he not only refers to a religious and iconical
(iconic?) content, but also to the world of science and medicine, creating a disconcerting but highly aesthetical work.
The Swiss artist Fabrice Gygi, who will represent his country this year at Venice Biennale, will be present in our booth through
an ensemble of works making allusion to violence, threat and phantasm. As always, Gygi’s pieces are impressive in their strong
formal simplicity.
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, who also represented his country, Mexico, at the last edition of the Venice Biennale: will present two
completely new works, as well as a Shadow Box. Using complex electronics, new technologies, internet, cell-phones and
robotics; his installations are often large-scale and he is known for his development of interactive exchanges with the spectator.
Representing Italy at the 2007 Venice Biennale, Giuseppe Penone explores with sensibility human’s surroundings: he works
with nature (natural?) elements such as wood, bronze or marble, water and leaves, alluding to metamorphosis and interactions
between men and nature.
Finally, the Irish artist Tom Molloy will propose Swarm, an installation composed of American Dollar bills, subtly and ironically
referring to what we believe to be our world’s values, especially quite fragile in these (disturbed) times...
