From 10th January 2012 Amelia Johnson Contemporary is thrilled to present an exciting initiative, The Third Eye Project. Featuring the video, projection and installation work of three international artists this series of installations will take place over three months and present three very different artistic responses to Hong Kong.

Opening the project will be Barry Jacques’s video projection work DOUBLEDOUBLE. Shot over a period of one year this work attempts to capture and relay some of the frenzied activity that takes place daily on the highways, waterways and high rise urban housing complexes of Hong Kong. By using various technical simplicities such as mirror imagery and the speeding up of the film Jacques abstracts these mundane activities into poetic and broodingly beautiful arcs of light and movement. David Smith’s powerful and haunting music adds weight and gravitas to Barry Jacques dramatic visuals combining to create an uniquely inspiring ode to Hong Kong.

Barry Jacques earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Limerick School of Art and Design, Ireland in 1995 and his Master’s degree in Fine Art from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin, Ireland in 2005. His works have been exhibited in Canada, Finland, Ireland, Scotland, China, the USA and Hong Kong. Jacques currently lives and works in Hong Kong.

David Smith graduated from Galway/Mayo I.T. in 1998, I.T. Sligo in 2001 and the University of Ulster 2003 with a Masters degree in Fine Art. He has participated in various exhibitions at national and international level, including shows in Ireland, the US, Canada and Hong Kong. Most recently he has exhibited through Manifest Gallery’s juried shows in the US, a solo show at Manifest Gallery and inclusion in the first and second edition of INPA (International Painting Annual). Smith is primarily a painter but also works on music based projects and soundtracks for video artworks and short films such as DOUBLEDOUBLE.
