"The Figure," a group show exploring diverse responses to the the figure, is on exhibition at the Allan Stone Gallery from November 1 through December 20, 2001. Over the past 120 years, figurative art work has provided a mirror to how we face ourselves in the modern world. These works struggle to understand, interpret and portray the evolving human figure. More than 25 artists are included in this survey of representational and abstract figuration, such as Balthus, Gaston Lachaise, Puvis de Chavannes, Giorgio de Chirico, Andre Derain, Nguyen Ducmanh, Richard Estes, Arshile Gorky, John Graham, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Tamara de Lempicka, Daniel Ludwig, Jean Puy, Stephen Cornelius Roberts, Lorraine Shemesh, Ron Schwerin, Wayne Thiebaus and Kurt Trampedach.
