Live performance by NY Masti, followed by a No-Reserve Auction

Reception commences at 6:30 p.m.

AICON GALLERY presented on July 20 the first joint exhibition of Riyas Komu and G. R. Iranna in Alone | Together, with an iconic selection of paintings and sculptures. Natural counterparts to one another, both artists’ representations of the human figure render the sociopolitical implications inherent to India’s post-colonial culture, as affected by themes of religion, media, gender and identity. While Komu’s hyper-realist portraiture focuses on the individual as a unique identity, Iranna examines the dynamic tensions between the individual and society, particularly in his sculptural installations of blindfolded, naked figures. Amidst visions of conflict and compromise, both artists incorporate distinct narrative layers into their subjects, weaving powerful allegories into the threads of memory that bind their art.

On August 23rd, join the reception at Aicon Gallery for an evening filled with art, musical revelry and a No-Reserve auction. As the premier female South Asian a cappella group, NY Masti will perform a medley of creative and original arrangements that fuse Western and South Asian music and beats. The group was formed in 1999 by two New York University members, and now includes Alum from Columbia University. The members of Masti’s musical repertoire range across various languages (English, Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Malayalam) and musical genres (hip-hop, R&B, pop, Hindustani, Carnatic, Bollywood).

Following the musical performance, Aicon Gallery will host an end-of-summer No-Reserve Auction. Modern and Contemporary works to be placed under the hammer will include Laxma Goud, M. F. Husain, Ram Kumar, Akbar Padamsee and Justin Ponmany. Be sure to get in on the action by registering to bid!

Alone | Together remains open to the public through Saturday, September 1.
