Exhibition Details:
West Shore Drive showcases a new body of work by Sebastian Blanck, who has gained prominent attention and praise in the New York contemporary art world over the past decade as a figurative painter. While Blanck made his mark in his early career painting nudes of his then girlfriend (now his wife) Isca Greenfield-Sanders, this new body of work broadens his subjects to friends and family members, all of whom are artists and musicians.

Blanck explores new territory in this exhibition, working in gouache instead of oils and employing collage techniques. The composition is divided like a puzzle, each piece solidly painted onto cutout paper and then adhered to stretched paper. He states: "I always painted with oil paint until this series ñ but oils arenít immediate enough for these paintings. I need to see the color relationships that I am creating as I lay down the shapes. It is exciting how a change of material can open up new opportunities." This fresh technique breaths vibrancy to Blanck's established brand of genuine and intimate portraits, revealing glimpses of his private life that is accessible and relatable to his audience.

Artist Information:
Sebastian Blanck received a B.F.A. in painting from The Rhode Island School of Design. In 2001, he was a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome. Blanck is married to the artist Isca Greenfield-Sanders, with whom he has a son. They live and work in New York City.

Sebastian Blanck has had numerous solo exhibitions including those at Baldwin Gallery in Aspen Colorado, Bjorn Wetterling Gallery in Stockholm and Werkstatte Gallery in New York. His work has been reviewed in dozens of magazines and newspapers including The New York Art World, Art Forum, Paper Magazine, the New York Post and the New Yorker.

In addition to being and established artist, Blanck is also an accomplished musician. He is a founding member of the experimental electronica group Black Dice along with Bjorn Copeland, Hisham Bharoocha and Eric Copeland. He recently recorded a single with Caroline Polocheck of the band Chairlift, available for download on thefader.com.
