When asked in a 1991 interview with Mark Rosenthal about what fuels his aesthetic choices in his work, John Baldessari replied: “I’m interested in what happens
when two images come together and in the meaning that ensues.”
Cleverly obscured by colorful shapes and riddled with disparate images, Baldessari’s Gemini series from 1991 invites many interpretations
of the work. Aptly titled “Seven Somewhat Large, Full Color Lithographs (with a bit of silkscreen)” the series also reflects the hybrid nature of the artist’s oeuvre. His approach to art-making is one that rebels against traditional painting through the use of appropriated photographs, irregular shapes and proportions. His influence
on the wide-scale acceptance of photography
in contemporary art discourse, through works that traverse the boundaries of printmaking,
painting, photography and film will soon be the subject of a major retrospective beginning this fall at the Tate Modern. It will travel to the Museo d’Arte Contemporani de Barcelona, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. He is also being awarded the prestigious
Golden Lions for Lifetime Acheivement at the 53rd Venice Biennale.
