Hubertus Gojowczyk | The Book As Object
April 28 – June 24, 2005

Using the book as the focus of his art, Hubertus Gojowczyk transforms an object usually perceived in terms of the words within its covers into a work of art in and of itself. His art is unique in both form and content, with subtle allusions to literature and history, music and semantics.

Gojowczyk’s books are encased in celestial maps and embedded with flowers; they have pages of music pierced with nails and antique folios curling with age, creating literary labyrinths. His art is filled with wit and poetry, satire and yearning. In the words of Werner Schmalenbach, “Gojowczyk does not destroy objects; he animates them through his interventions. He breathes life into them. By sacrificing their given nature, he imbues them with a new dimension.”

From 1967 to 1971, Hubertus Gojowczyk studied at the Art Academy, Düsseldorf, with Joseph Beuys and Dieter Roth. He participated in Kassel’s Documenta 5 and Documenta 6 and has exhibited widely in Europe and the United States. “The Book As Object,” April 28 – June 24, 2005, is the artist’s first retrospective in the United States. An illustrated catalogue, with text by Werner Schmalenbach, will also be available.

On the occasion of this exhibition, Achim Moeller Fine Art is particularly pleased to present Gojowczyk: A Portfolio of Musical Notes, 1974-2005, consisting of nine offset lithograph prints. The portfolio, in an edition of fifty including ten artist’s proofs, centers on the theme of music and musical notes and introduces to the public Gojowczyk’s work in this medium.
