Teresita Fernandez / South Gallery: L’Art de Vivre    Apr 15 - May 14, 2005

Lehmann Maupin would like to announce an exhibition of new work by Teresita Fernandez. This will be Fernandez's second solo exhibition at Lehmann Maupin.

Evident in her multi-layered drawings, glass cube wall pieces and sculpture Teresita Fernandez gives form to natural phenomena. By breaking these down to their essential elements Fernandez presents an exhibition of minimal work, which evokes smoke and fire. On exhibit will be a large "ring of fire" constructed from thousands of silk threads from Scalamandre. Produced during her residency at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia, these layers of richly colored threads are held taught between two rings and suspended from the ceiling creating a unique optical illusion of transparency and dense color.

Fernandez has had solo exhibitions at Site Santa Fe, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C., and Castello di Rivoli in Turin, Italy. She will also have solo exhibitions at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia and at the Centro de Arte Contemporaneo de Malaga in Spain later this Spring. Teresita Fernandez is the recipient of numerous awards and was commissioned for a special project by the Museum of Modern Art in New York and is the youngest artist commissioned by the Seattle Art Museum for the Olympic Sculpture Park. Here she has designed a covered glass bridge titled Seattle Cloud Cover where visitors will be allowed to walk through and see the sky and cityscape change through tiny holes in the colored glass.

L’Art de Vivre: Curated by Josh Baer & Suzanne Demisch

Lehmann Maupin would like to announce L’Art de Vivre an exhibition organized by Josh Baer and Suzanne Demisch with artworks and furniture selected with the eye of a “collector” and presented with a personal narrative.

Together, the furniture and artworks represent a unique and personal collection of 20th Century artistic creation.

The artworks, which Baer describes as “seminal” or “pivotal,” are not unique works but are central to the history of each artist in the exhibition. They range from the period of Marcel Duchamp’s Boite-en-valise and Man Ray’s Electricite, which he produced for the French electric company, to recent wallpaper by British artist Sarah Lucas. Other Artists included are Joseph Beuys, Bruce Nauman, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Robert Gober, Jenny Holzer, Mike Kelley, Andy Warhol, Chris Burden, Ed Ruscha and Fischli Weiss.

The furniture can be described as sculpture with a use and also represents the artists’ overall expression of their body of work. The selection includes works by Atelier A, John Chamberlain, Donald Judd, Francois Xavier+ Claude Lalanne, Sol Lewitt, Gerrit Rietveld, Giacometti, Charlotte Perriand and others.

Josh Baer is a private art dealer, publisher of The Baer Faxt newsletter and recently curated the Chris Burden exhibition at Zwirner & Wirth. Suzanne Demisch is also a private dealer specializing in 1960s and 70s decorative arts and design.
