Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to exhibit new paintings by John Zurier. His new canvases will be presented in a special installation with new sculptures by John Beech.*

Zurier’s exhibition will feature a group of large vertical paintings on linen, each an open composition of nearly transparent gestures of variations of light blue along with a complimentary group of smaller paintings. Fascinated by the movement of light and color across a surface, the artist seeks a simplicity wherein this sensation becomes embedded in the painting’s surface. Above all, Zurier is interested in a naturalness and directness in the relationship of viewer to the artwork.

Evidenced by their titles, the paintings were inspired by a trip the artist took to Sweden and Finnland. For the most part the names are towns in Finnland.

With a 25-year career in painting, John Zurier consciously addresses the material fact of painting and painting’s history. His reductive, nearly monochrome, soft-hued abstract paintings play at crossing the line into representation. Filled with an awareness of nature, they evoke the silence of luminous weather and the presence of a human touch.

John Zurier lives and works in Berkeley, CA. Recent exhibitions include: the Gwangju Biennale, Korea, 2008; Peter Blum Gallery, New York 2007; Larry Becker Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 2005; Exodus: Between Promise and Fulfillment, Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge, England, 2003; Oblaka, Peer Trust, London, England, 2003; Whitney Biennial 2002, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY 2002.

Works by John Zurier are represented in the permanent collections of the Berkeley Art Museum, the Oakland Museum, the San Francisco Art Museum, the University of California Art Collection at Mission Bay, San Francisco, the Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville, Maine and the Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, Maine.
