Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce the exhibition "Constructing History: A Requiem to Mark the Moment" a new body of work comprising black and white photographs and a video film created by CARRIE MAE WEEMS.

Carrie Mae Weems has gained international renown for her sculptural installations, constructed with photography, film text and performance. Examining cultural history and folklore with these critical tools, her works communicate a poetic solemnity.

In "Constructing History" Weems worked with students from the Savannah College of Art and Design to re-enact iconic moments from the 1960ís which she photographed and filmed in an obvious studio environment. The chosen moments are about violence and social upheaval and demonstrate disruption in the path of 20th Century history and thinking.

With young people (who were not yet born) acting out famous archetypal moments of assassination, witness and mourning, a profound meaning unfolds in their staged theatricality. Weems reveals to her actors and to the audience difficulties presented by the events and their cultural assignment to our collective memory. The immediacy of the performances contrasts against the distance and remove of the real events from our past.

A reception for the artist will be held Thursday, January 8 from 5:30- 7:30 p.m.
