Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to present “East / West”, an exhibition of new works by PAMELA WILSON-RYCKMAN.
Wilson-Ryckman’s work finds its source in news media. From newsprint and televised photography of urban landscapes the artist distills images of the aftermath of disasters into a muted palette in her watercolors and oil paintings. The destruction and chaos, whether manmade or caused by nature, are rendered quiet and fragile, mirroring the fragility of the situation portrayed.
Her paintings suggest a physical form for the way these violent images eventually become quietly stored in our memories. These most recent works experiment by tempering a “Western” visual sense (in which one moment in time is depicted from a single-point perspective) with an “Eastern” style where multiple perspectives and moments might be depicted in one picture.
Pamela Wilson-Ryckman received her MA in Art History, Theory and Criticism from the Art Institute of Chicago and has lived and worked in San Francisco for over five years. Her works were recently featured in the 2006 Seville Biennial curated by Okwui Enwezor and in the 2007 exhibition The Landscape of War at the San Jose ICA.
