PAT PASSLOF
Feb. 10 – Mar. 12, 2005

The Elizabeth Harris Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Pat Passlof. The Gallery is located at 529 West 20th Street, 6th floor, and is open Tuesday through Saturday 10-6. There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, February 12, from 5-7.

Pat Passlof’s latest paintings have a youthful freshness but also the assurance born of the experience of 60 years of painting. In this new series, the “Eighth House” paintings, the grid is a prominent presence. But as David Cohen writes in his essay...” it is always, in Ruskin’s great phrase, ‘organically transgressed’ rather than mechanical or overbearing.” Passlof is a passionate and long time practitioner of T’ai Chi, which Cohen associates with her approach to painting...“Especially this new body of work, where closely matched calligraphic forms push against invisible grid lines, which cordon them off and at the same time ensure unity and a unifying flow. The grid fragments, yet at the same time, facilitates perceptions of space and time.” And as in the structure and movements of T’ai Chi...”Her painting is an assured, fluent balance of gesture and composition.” Cohen continues...”Gesture is a conduit for energy, and keeps the surfaces lively, while pattern aligns emotion to a spiritually enlarging conception of form.”

Pat Passlof has been exhibiting since 1952. She received the Award of Merit for Painting from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2000, and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1999.
