Pilar Corrias Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of new works by the internationally
acclaimed artist Tobias Rehberger.
Widely regarded as one of the most important artists working today, Tobias Rehberger creates
sculptures, environments and installations revolving around the principle concept of transformation.
Working with industrial processes and technological innovations, Rehberger translates ordinary
situations and objects with which we are familiar exploring the boundaries between functionality
and the aesthetic. At once utilitarian, ambient and perceptually powerful, Rehberger’s works mimic
the glossy perfection of the manufactured yet idiosyncrasies in terms of their colour, size, function
or location demand new rules of engagement on behalf of the beholder.
For his first exhibition at Pilar Corrias Gallery, Rehberger will transform the gallery into a complex
time-telling device. Featuring new light sculptures, digital works and cuckoo clocks brought
together in a single installation, Cuckoo Clock Shop seeks to question the viewer’s relationship
to the physical experience of time, expanding beyond a strictly linear model to suggest a richer more
expansive understanding that allows for temporal heterogeneity and diversity.
Tobias Rehberger was born in 1966 in Esslingen, Germany and received his MFA from Hochschule für Bildende Kunst, Frankfurt am Main. Major solo exhibitions of the artist’s work include: Kunstraum Innsbruck (2009); Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (2008); Fondazione Prada, Milan (2007); Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid (2005), and Whitechapel Gallery, London (2004). Future exhibitions include The Quick and the Dead, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (2009). Rehberger has recently been awarded the 2009 Hans-Thoma-Preis from the German province of Baden-Württemberg, he has also been commissioned to create an installation for the Palazzo delle Espozizioni at the 53rd Venice Biennial.
Tobias Rehberger lives and works in Frankfurt am Main.
