LA Contemporary is especially proud to present a dynamic group exhibition of prominent West Coast artists, titled: “Nepotism”. The collection is open to the public through January 10, 2009 and will include sculptures, paintings, prints, and drawings by 15 transcendent visionary artists.
“Nepotism” consists of renowned artists who have been selected by Laddie John Dill and Hoojung Lee. All of the artists have shared close relationships with Laddie John Dill for a long period of time. As a result they have constructively influenced each other’s work.
“Nepotism” conveys dialog between the artists of the 70’s resulted in experiments with primarily alternative materials, light and space. In this exhibition, each artist introduces a range of work from different times, “old and recent work”. This is a powerful and sensual collection of artworks that provoke deep nostalgic emotions from each artist. In aspect of style, medium and energy, the majority of artists’ older pieces seem very different than what they are doing now. Nevertheless, sometimes recycled-images from their older work come into play in their recent work as well.
In early years (the early 70’s), Dill has worked closely with Jasper Johns and Robert Rauchenberg. Due to the privileged opportunity, working with the legendary artists in New York, it led Dill to be engaged in conversation with John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Elaine De Kooning, Robert Irwin, Louise Nevelson, etc. Dill’s ongoing dialog with these masters has also inspired his creative process and artistic approach. It was inevitable for Dill to come back to the West Coast to gather his own luminaries.
Dill says, “The strength and diversity, and sheer willpower of this group has always had a huge influence on my identity as an artist.”
