Gabríela Friðriksdóttir (geboren 1971) hat sich mit ihrer Versations Tetralogia Installation auf der Venedig Biennale 2005 und der Ausstellung Inside the Core (2006) im Migros Museum Zürich als die wichtigste Isländische Künstlerin ihrer Generation etabliert. In ihrem Videowerk, das stets in einem multimedialen installativen Kontext präsentiert wird, entfaltet sich eine rätsel- und traumhafte Mythologie von unwiderstehlicher Suggestionskraft.

Mit Ouroboros zeigt Gabríela Friðriksdóttir Ihre zweite Einzelausstellung in der Spielhaus Morrison Galerie. In den neuen weitläufigen Galerieräumen in der Heidestraße hinter dem Hamburger Bahnhof präsentiert die Isländische Künstlerin in einer aufwändigen Installation Ihre neueste Videoarbeit zusammen mit einer monumentalen Skulptur, Fotoarbeiten, Malerei und Zeichnung. Zur Eröffnung am Abend des 29. September wird die Künstlerin mit Freunden und Darstellern des Videos eine musikalische Performance inszenieren.

Der Ouroboros in Gestalt einer Schlange, die sich selbst in den Schwanz beisst, hat als Sonnensymbol seinen Ursprung in der Altägyptischen Sagenwelt, und zieht sich als Symbolfigur für den zyklischen und unendlichen Charakter des Lebens durch die Griechische, Hinduistische, und, als Jörmungandr, bis in die nordische Mythologie.

Für Gabríela Friðriksdóttir liegt die Essenz des Lebens in den Menschen, daher lässt sie in Ouroboros ihre besten Freunde als Schauspieler einen zyklischen Reigen von sieben traumähnlichen Szenen aufführen, die assoziativ um die Motive des Geborenwerdens und Sterbens kreisen, um Abreise und Ankunft, um die gegenseitige Bedingtheit von Werden und Vergehen, wie in der kreisförmigen Figur des Ouroboros angelegt. Dieser Film erzählt in traumhaften und albtraumhaften Szenen von der Schönheit und Schmerzlichkeit menschlicher Beziehungen, angesielt in der wilden und dennoch durchgeistigten Natur Islands, die den Handlugen eine Ahnung von Ewigkeit geben.

Am Abend des 29. Septembers eröffnen in der Heidestraße hinter dem Hamburger Bahnhof neben Spielhaus Morrison auch Frank Badur bei Fruehsorge Contemporary Drawings. Und zwei neue Galerien erweitern das Spektrum des Galeriestandortes Heidestraße: Haunch of Venison (London/Zürich) weihen Ihre spektakuläre Halle mit einer Ausstellung des Chinesischen Künstlers Zhang Huan ein, und die neugegründete AA Gallery eröffnet mit einer Installation der Künstlergruppe Artists Anonymous. Zusammen mit den auf dem Areal angesiedelten Künstlern, die am 29. September ihre Ateliers öffnen, feiern die Galerien ein Hoffest.

Spielhaus Morrison Galerie is proud to present their second solo show of Icelandic artist Gabríela Friðriksdóttir (b. 1971, lives in Reykjavik).

Following Friðriksdóttir's Versations Tetralogia installation at the Venice Biennale in 2005, and her exhibition Inside the Core at the Migros Museum Zurich last year, the artist here presents a major new video work at Spielhaus Morrison Galerie in Berlin.

The new video, Ouroboros, will be shown together with accompanying drawings and paintings, as well as a monumental sculptural work. A musical performance will also be given by the artists that were involved in the production of Ouroboros at the opening of this exhibition.

The Ouroboros ("tail-devourer") - is a dragon or serpent that bites its own tail thus forming a complete circle. One of the oldest mystical symbols, it originates from ancient Egyptian mythology where it was used to represent the sun and its eternal cyclical movement. Adopted by the Greeks, Romans and Norse as well as other more diverse mythologies such as Hindu, Ashanti and Aztec, the meaning of the Ouroboros has widened to symbolise the cycle of life and death, opposites in balance with each other, continuous renewal and the eternal unity of all things, thus by extension: infinity.

In Alchemy, the Ouroboros is perceived as having an archetypal significance to the human psyche, a view Gabríela Friðriksdóttir seems to share. The video, she explains, could be described as a journey through the seven vetebras of the snake, that together creates a universe of souls. For her, the meaning of life is all about people and being human, and it is with this focus that Friðriksdóttir produces her films, creating around the people that are close to her, friends and colleagues, who not only act but are also engaged as film crew. Following the performers through seven dreamlike scenes, Ouroboros circles associatively around the motives of birth and death, of departure and arrival, around the mutual relativity of being and ceasing to be, to express the core of the human soul.

On September 29th, in addition to the exhibition opening at Spielhaus Morrison Galerie, the Heidestrasse gallery precinct will be featuring a number of events, with the evening culminating in a joint courtyard party. Events include a solo exhibition by Berlin artist Frank Badur at Fruehsorge Contemporary Drawings and the inauguration of two new galleries; Haunch of Venison, opening their spectacular new location in Berlin with an exhibition by Chinese artist Zhang Huan; and the newly-formed AA Gallery, launching with an installation by the artist group Artists Anonymous.
