Aaron Young: Semper Idem (Brussels)    Oct 20 - Dec 17, 2009

Aaron Young est connu pour les performances qu'il a réalisées à New York, Moscou et Naples.
Durant ces performances, le public assiste à la réalisation de peintures, s'apparentant à des " burn out " qui sont les traces de pneus brûlés sur la route lors de dérapages contrôlés en moto : sous la direction de l'artiste des motos font trajectoires et dérapages controlés sur des panneaux d'aluminium peints de manière monochrome en couches superposées de couleurs différentes selon une technique mise au point par l'artiste. La couche supérieure est rejetée, brulée par les pneus, révélant ainsi la ou les couches de couleurs inférieures. De la performance, seule reste un certains nombre de peintures qu'Aaron Young sélectionne et retravaille en studio.

Aaron Young reprend avec talent le rôle du bad boy américain, héros à la fois rebelle et épris de justice, libre dans sa création de critiquer l'Amérique dont il est aussi une incarnation.
Son travail est à la fois "Warholien" et dans la lignée de l'abstraction américaine, de l'Action Painting.

Pour sa première exposition personnelle, Aaron Young présentera une série de nouvelles pièces, y compris des sculptures.

Aaron Young est né à San Francisco en 1972. Il a suivi des cours au San Francisco Art Institute et a ensuite obtenu une maîtrise de l'Université de Yale en 2004.
Son travail a été présenté internationalement dans de nombreuses expositions, par exemple au Contemporary Art Center de Long Island City, P.S.1, (2005), à la biennale du Whitney, New York (2006), à la Serpentine Gallery, London (2006) et la 2ème Biennale d'art Contemporain de Moscou (2007).
Il vit et travaille à New-York et Miami.

On the occasion of the re-opening of its renovated gallery space, Almine Rech Gallery, Brussels, is pleased to announce the first european Gallery solo show of Aaron Young.

Aaron Young is well-known for the performances he did in New York, Moscow and Naples. During these performances, the audience witnesses motorcyclists, following the artist’s instructions, riding on metal panels painted with superposed monochrome layers of paintings, burning off the surface layer with their tires, revealing the color layers underneath, and thus creating true ‘Action paintings’.

Aaron Young skilfully assumes the role of American rebel and hero, with creative freedom and essentially american identity, expressing a critical vision of America while embodying it.

For his first solo show at the Gallery, Aaron Young will present a series of new works, including sculptures.

Aaron Young was born in 1972 in San Francisco. He attended San Francisco Art Institute in 2001 and then received an MFA from Yale University in 2004. His work has been exhibited internationally for instance at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Long Island City (2005), the Whitney Biennial, New York (2006), the Serpentine Gallery, London (2006) and the 2nd Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, (2007).

He lives and works in New York and Miami.
