FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LILI ALMOG
Perfect Intimacy
13 May – 30 June 2006
Opening Reception and Book Signing: Saturday, 13 May from 6 – 8 pm
Andrea Meislin Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Perfect Intimacy. This exhibition marks the
first New York solo exhibition for Lili Almog and will feature 18 color photographs of cloistered nuns.
Perfect Intimacy is a series of portraits drawn from a larger project two years in the making. It is fully
illustrated in its entirety in a 128-page book released by powerHouse Books in April 2006. The opening
reception and book signing will take place at the gallery on Saturday, May 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.
Lili Almog’s photographic practice is centered on the depiction of women and their private lives. Almog,
an Israeli artist living and working in New York, spent the past two years visiting nuns in three different
Carmelite monasteries: Mount Carmel, Haifa – where the order was founded and assumed its name in
the year 1200; Port Tobacco, Maryland – the first Carmelite monastery in the United States; and
Bethlehem – the birthplace of Jesus. The result of this work, Perfect Intimacy, is an experience of the
cloistered world in which these nuns live and a documentation of their state of mind, relationship with
God, and spiritual identity.
Lili Almog’s work has been exhibited internationally for over ten years, including exhibitions at
Ffotogallery, Cardiff, UK; the Prague House of Photography, Czech Republic; The Museum Centre
Vapriikk, Finland; The Internationale Fototage Festival, Manheim, Germany; The Photographers’ Gallery
in London, UK; and was most recently featured in Discoveries of the Meeting Place, Fotofest, Houston, TX.
Her work is included in several public collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, England;
Norton Museum of Art, Florida; Musee de la Photographie, Belgium; Herzliya Museum of Art, Israel; and
the Museet for Fotokunst, Denmark. Almog’s photographs have appeared in New York Magazine, Fotograf,
The Miami Herald, Boston Globe, Vogue, and several books.
