AMSTERDAM WHITNEY GALLERY, 511 West 25th Street, Chelsea, New York City, is proud to showcase in its AUGUST 1- AUGUST 26, 2008 exhibition, leading contemporary master artists whose works run the gamut from figurative to surrealist, abstract to landscape. AMSTERDAM WHITNEY GALLERY continues to present the innovative art of the contemporary master of photomontage, S.M. LEWIS.
STARLIT REVERIES introduces the viewer to three visionary masters in the gallery’s constellation of stars. These artists offer a fantastically rich, non-representational exhibition that reverberates with a seductive kaleidoscope of color, form, and texture while communicating a powerful, visceral message. Whether employing shimmering brushstrokes or bold fields of color, these artists translate the invisible to the visible through their unique talent and skill. Through their deeply personal forms of expression, they offer a stunning glimpse into contemporary abstract painting. L’OR combines abstract form with the historically “scientific” female to create an abstracted woman who is completely recognizable, and who yet simultaneously seems somehow distant as she emerges from behind a screen of vivid color and ethereal shadows. SHAWN JACOBS works with bright, expressive colors in order to add dynamism, excitement, and energy to his work, which results in the viewers’ eyes darting all over the canvas, finding drippings of paint that flow into each other and lead to another beautiful collision of color and line. The work of SUE KOPCHO dynamically merges unexpected, exciting, charismatic, color spectrums with a stunning visual presentation that communicates a varied range of emotions.
STAR FILLED SYNCHRONICITIES innovatively explores the visual and emotional aesthetics of our modern world as demonstrated through the work of the artists in this cavalcade of stars in the diverse mediums of bronze and photography and their powerful ability to explore the breadth and depth of innovative conceptualization. In his deep and cuttingly defined photographic images, MICHEAL SHOPA captures landscape compositions that reveal a breathtaking scope, as well as reflect a dynamic symphony of light and shadow in which viewers are transported to these natural wonders and are granted a moment of serenity through his contemplative reverence for nature. The sublime work of SERGUEI VELIDTCHENKO is a bronze sculpture that will endure because the energy captured in this stunning moment has been frozen with such motion and emotion that it seems as if the sculpture could immediately come to life. The true mystery of photography is evoked in the ethereal images of PATRICIA GIBSON through the penetrating gazes of the pale, dream-like, women she provocatively depicts against a dark background, creating a fascinating perspective and a sense of wonderment for the viewer.
BETWEEN STARLIGHT & SUNLIGHT is a whirlwind tour of three artists in this talented galaxy of stars who have discovered an artistic channel through which to explore their dreams and recollections in portraits, street scenes, and vibrant landscapes. The exciting visual play is highly individualistic; around each corner is a new way of perceiving the world that will electrify fans of contemporary art. DR. RALPH VOGLER creates paintings that bridge the gap between figurative, still life, and landscape art, with a penchant for masterful coloration while deftly blending his subject matter with luminescent colors. Tennessee artist SHERRIE RUSS LEVINE travels the globe to Italy to paint en-plein-air, where she finds the most beautiful scenes to depict in a shimmering play of light and opalescent colors which appear in nature while providing a welcome respite from the commercial environment of modern life. Elegant and emotive, SUSAN ECK’s stunning paintings evoke a vast, visionary world of passion and magnificence that is wonderfully rich in hue, and a majestic visualization of a complex, visible realm. KATHLEEN KEIL HILL’s paintings of animals are true portraits, as a sense of personality, confidence, and pride that belongs uniquely to each animal comes forth in each depiction as the animals come to life, and either soar off the page or cuddle up affectionately to the viewer.
SERENADE FROM A STAR is an intrinsic focus on the artistic creative process. This star-filled exhibition invites the viewer to participate in a diverse tour of heavenly art portrayed by three talented artists whose intriguing work is a unique expression of the creative individual. Cultivating their singular viewpoints and varied interests through painting, the works in the exhibition reveal a contemporary aesthetic by presenting a modern vision of the triumphs and poignancy of life. The paintings of JACK JASPER are visualization of feeling, emotion, and the unknown expressed through the mesmerizing effect of dazzling color, light, and images whose meanings play upon each other throughout the painting. D. LOREN CHAMPLIN paints portraits with bold strokes, confidently displaying the turbulent emotions of his portrait sitters in a spinning environment with moves that are deft and sure as he creates swirling vortexes and amorphous backgrounds which are the perfect complement to the subjects of the foreground. The electric pulsating energy and internal rhythms of color in the paintings of GUY WILKINS’ demonstrate the power of the juxtaposition of color and form by evoking both visual and emotional responses in the viewer while entreating them to explore the interplay of the narratives.
