Peter Bergeron and Dennis Sheehan
Effects of Light

October 16, 2009- November 14, 2009

Opening Reception: Friday, October 16, 6-8 pm. All are invited to meet the artists.

The landscape paintings of Dennis Sheehan and Peter Bergeron reflect the simple beauty of nature and provide a rich, sensory experience arousing memories and recalling smells and sounds.Trained in a classical, academic tradition, both Dennis Sheehan and Peter Bergeron are highly accomplished in the luminist and tonalist styles of the later 19th century American art. Their serene, atmospheric landscapes reveal the lingering glow of light at dawn and dusk and the transition into twilight; the breathtaking effects of early morning, sunset, moonlight, mist-laden skies, and the stillness of the moment.

Sheehan focuses on the effect of light in the landscape and is a devotee of the mystical and expressive landscapes of George Inness. As evening approaches in Autumn Sonata, a hypnotic beauty brings the viewer to a deep sense of peace. A meandering stream shimmers with evening sky’s reflection and verdant grasses with faint undertones of orange bronzing seem to hold the warmth of the day.

Sheehan’s Fall Hues has a sensuous golden radiance that is luminous against dark, dramatic trees punctuated with fiery leaves of russet. By layering his paintings with thin glazes, light travels and is refracted at different levels, making the painting itself seem to emanate light.

Bergeron’s evocative oils convey a feeling of serenity and have an expressiveness and depth enhanced by his use of glazes. One feels the calm beauty and temperature of the air in Morning Haze, Madison CT. Lush marshes at low tide gently recede with Faulkners Island in the haze while foreground details of the rocks and grasses are very distinct. Sunset on the Connecticut Shore captures the beauty of the last lingering light on a perfect summer evening. By applying layers of transparent glazes, the effect is luminous.

Dennis Sheehan, born in Boston in 1950, is a member of the Guild of Boston Artists. His work is in major public and private collections, including the White House.

Peter Bergeron, born in 1952, attended the Paier Art School in New Haven and draws inspiration from the Hudson River School, uniting his canvases with atmospheric light, sharply focused foreground and hazed distance.
