"Summer in Connecticut"
Landscapes and Shoreline views
July 13 – August 13, 2006
Opening Reception: Thursday, July 13, 5 pm - 8 pm
Light shimmering across shoreline marshes, breezy days, beached boats and children playing on the sand, blooming poppies along the Connecticut River, and the bustling small town charm of Madison are some of the images captured in "Summer in Connecticut" Landscapes and Shoreline Views, an upcoming plein air exhibition opening Thursday, July 13 at Susan Powell Fine Art, 679 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT.
Featured in the exhibition are paintings by members of the Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society as well as a select group of award winning artist members of the New England Plein Air Painters. Artists represented by the gallery will also be included. 80 paintings will be for sale, and there will be a raffle drawing for a painting amongst those who come to the opening on Thursday, July 13.
The Connecticut Plein Air Painters Society was formed in 1995 by artist Jane Zisk. The Society's founding principals were to encourage and support excellence in painting directly from nature while providing regular opportunities for members to paint together. Plein Air painting is a revered Connecticut tradition which began in the late 19th century in Cos Cob and Old Lyme. Inspired by the French impressionists, John Constable and Francois Millet, Plein Air artists paint directly from nature, capturing in rich detail the beauty and atmosphere of the landscape with a spirit and spontaneity not achieved in the studio. "We hope everyone will come and see these wonderfully unique views of recognizable local spots," says Susan Powell, owner of the gallery.
Susan Powell Fine Art specializes in Contemporary Realism, Plein Air painting and 19th and 20th century American paintings. A portion of the proceeds from the exhibition will benefit the Shoreline Alliance. Since 1980, the Shoreline Arts Alliance has been a major force for the arts on the Shoreline.
