Margo Leavin Gallery is pleased to announce Reading Standing Up, a group exhibition featuring thirteen artists, on view through 14 March 2009.

Taken from a floor piece by Allen Ruppersberg, the exhibition’s title references the viewer’s process of “reading” an artwork. While many of the works in the exhibition feature some sort of textual element, the manner in which we determine the meaning of an artwork is quite different from our experience interpreting literary text. The objects in Reading Standing Up highlight the means by which an artist strives to transmit information and convey meaning, yet they emphasize the process through which we as viewers come to understand the signs, symbols, and subject matter provided. As Roland Barthes wrote, “The reader is the space on which all the quotations that make up a writing are inscribed without any of them being lost; a text’s unity lies not in its origin but in its destination.”

Artists included in the exhibition are:

John Baldessari
Jonathan Borofsky
Sarah Charlesworth
Roy Dowell
Joseph Kosuth
William Leavitt
John M. Miller
Allen Ruppersberg
Gary Simmons
Alexis Smith
Mungo Thomson
Jeffrey Vallance
Brenna Youngblood

Margo Leavin Gallery is located at 812 North Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
