Real World
Solo Exhibition of Seung Woo Back
August 1st - 14th, 2007 / Insa Art Center
Seung Woo Back is the fourth artist to be featured by The Contemporary of Gana Art Gallery. He touches upon the issue of individual and social identity, which is frequently distorted in the gap between ideal and reality in the mixed-up world, with wittily composed photography. While Real World Ⅰ reveals the multiple and kitschy reality of Korean culture―a mixture of fantasies towards Western culture and different time-spaces―by photographing miniature models of world-famous buildings and Korean apartment complexes with an intentionally overlapping perspective, Real World Ⅱ visualizes the identity of the individual, who cannot be free from the Western-centered viewpoint and its political mechanism that treats Korea and "war" without discrimination, through toy soldiers, who are at war in spaces of daily life.
