Denise Bibro Fine Art, 529 West 20th Street, 4th floor, Chelsea, New York City, is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of Audrey Ushenko, In Natural Habitat, Part II, October 3 – November 2, 2002.

Consistent with her works of the past Ushenko’s continues her exploration of narrative realism. Her works are rich, complex figurative and still life paintings that possess a nervous energy. Her paintings are stories of recurring human issues often prompted by a twisted reality. Ushenko’s earlier works where primarily mythological and allegorical. Her recent works are focused on depicting human situations and interactions of people who are both living and dead. These paintings represent social situations, timeless stories and enduring issues that are rendered with a contemporary twist.

Ushenko’s current large paintings depict complex groupings of figures utilizing multifaceted planes of space - webs of people, their interactions, relationships, both real and perceived, are her thematic fodder. She has furthered this theme in her new paintings of museum and gallery settings. Ushenko explores what these institutions represent, both in the context of the art and the individual who relates to the art, privately and publicly. Her smaller paintings such as Among My Souvenirs, are more intimate, focusing in on still life or still life interiors (depicting the detritus of an individual’s life). They represent the exoskeleton of the person that dwells in it.

Always a significant element in Ms. Ushenko’s work is her integration of Venetian Renaissance methods of paint application with Impressionist color and light theory. The combination of the old masters’ technique of glazing the canvas and carefully layered surfaces of paint enhance the luminosity of Ushenko’s work.

Audrey Ushenko earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Art History at Northwestern University, Evanston, IL after studying at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN and the Art Institute of Chicago, IL. She has exhibited her work extensively throughout the United States including the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, IN; The National Academy of Design, NYC; University Museum, Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, MO among others. Ms. Ushenko is a professor at (Indiana - Purdue University, Fort Wayne (IPFW), IN.

Catalogues of Audrey Ushenko’s works are available.

There will be a reception for the artist on Thursday, October 3, 6-8pm
