Washington DC – Hemphill Fine Arts presents Robin Rose: Endeavor. The exhibition opens on April 4, 2009 with a public reception from 6:30 – 8:30pm and will remain on view through May 30, 2009.
Endeavor, an exhibition of new encaustic paintings, is as much about the process and labors of making a thing as it is about the final product. Reflecting on Captain James Cook, whose ship was called The Endeavor, Robin Rose feels the importance of seeing his process through to the very end. The result is a cohesive body of paintings. When examined individually, each offers a unique viewing experience. He intends for the viewer to experience an initial moment of recognition upon first encountering his paintings, but anticipates that the viewer will be unable to place exactly what they are seeing. Something familiar is suggested, without being literally revealed.
This exhibition is concurrent with Robin Rose: Cypher at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center, Washington, DC, April 7 – May 17, 2009.
Born in 1946 in Ocala, Florida, Robin Rose received his Master of Fine Arts from Florida State University. Rose’s work has been exhibited in New York, California, and Washington, DC. His work is included in the collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Phillips Collection, and other public and private collections.
