Gotthard Graubner widmet seine Ausstellung „Chapeau, mon ami“ dem 40jährigen Bestehen der Galerie m Bochum und ihrem Gründer, seinem Freund Alexander von Berswordt.

Mit unbeirrbarer Konsequenz und eindrucksvoller Intensität lässt Graubner sich in seiner Malerei auf die Autonomie der Farbe ein und erforscht immer wieder auf’s Neue ihre Eigenschaften und die daraus resultierende irrationale Wirkmacht. Der bloßen Funktion eines Darstellungsmittels enthoben, ist die Farbe selbst grundlegendes Bildelement seiner Werke und entfaltet in zahlreichen Nuancen ein spannungsvolles Eigenleben, das über die zweidimensionale Bildfläche hinaus in einen eigenen Farb-Raum übergeht.
Dabei verstrickt er sich, vor allem während des Entstehungsprozesses der objekthaften Farbraumkörper immer tiefer in ein „Abenteuer, [...] dass nie zu Ende geht.“

„Meine Bilder bauen sich auf im Wachsen des Lichts [...]“ Licht und Raum sind für Graubner bei der Installation seiner Malereien von besonderer Bedeutung. In den großzügigen, lichtdurchfluteten Räumen der Galerie m inszeniert er einen symbiotisch anmutenden Dialog der Bilder mit dem Raum. Die mit Farbe gesättigte Ebene atmet: Durch seine Positionierung der Farbraumkörper lässt er nun den Galerieraum atmen.

Max Imdahl nannte Graubners Farbräume „Empfindungsräume.“ Wie zutreffend dieser Begriff ist, zeigt sich deutlich an den Farbraumkörpern aus den 80er Jahren bis heute. Die Kissenbilder mit ihrer kontrastreichen, intensiven Koloristik, entziehen sich in ihrer Farbwirklichkeit der rationalen Beherrschung durch den Betrachter.
Die innere Bewegtheit des malerischen Gestus wird durch das Volumen dieser Werke noch gesteigert, so dass sie buchstäblich in den Raum hineinzugreifen scheinen. Farbe und Malgrund verbinden sich nachvollziehbar zum Farbkörper, zum „malerischen Organismus.“ Zarte Bildobjekte, die mit Perlon bespannten Schaumstoffkissenbilder der 60er und frühen 70er Jahre bergen dagegen die immaterielle Erscheinung von Farblicht in sich. Als Lichttrampoline werden sie von Graubner bezeichnet.

Seine Werke interagieren miteinander, mit dem Raum und dem Betrachter. Die Farben pulsieren und verändern sich – an der Erforschung der„unterschiedlichen Wirkung der Farbschichten“ arbeitet der Künstler bis heute.

Seit 40 Jahren entwickelt sich das Programm der Galerie m in enger Zusammenarbeit mit ihren Künstlern.
1969 von Alexander von Berswordt gegründet und 1972 in den großzügig konzipierten Ausstellungsräumen im Parkgelände Haus Weitmar beheimatet, hat sich die Galerie m seit jeher für ein progressives Programm eingesetzt.
Die Galerie blickt auf eine intensive Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlern wie François Morellet, Lee Ufan, Richard Serra, Arnulf Rainer und Gotthard Graubner zurück, denen sie seit ihren Anfängen verbunden ist. Während in den Anfangsjahren vor allem die Neue Konkrete Kunst im Mittelpunkt stand, entwickelte Susanne Breidenbach in den frühen 90er Jahren zusätzlich einen bemerkenswerten fotografischen Schwerpunkt: KünstlerInnen wie Lucinda Devlin, Thomas Florschuetz, Evelyn Hofer, Dirk Reinartz und Aino Kannisto sind hier zu nennen.
Susanne Breidenbach ist seit der Übergabe im Jahr 2003 Eignerin der Galerie m. Jeweils eine der vier Ausstellungen im Jahr widmet sie einer neuen künstlerischen Position, wobei ganz verschiedenen Medien Raum gegeben wird. Werke von Carla Guagliardi, Sybille Berger, Melanie Manchot, Jan Wawrzyniak oder Laura Letinsky vermittelten in den vergangenen Jahren den Besuchern einen spannenden Einblick in das aktuelle Kunstgeschehen.

Die Galerie m zelebriert den Anlass 40 Jahre Galerie m Bochum mit einer Ausstellungs-Trilogie und verweist damit auf die Kunst selbst, die im Zentrum aller Aktivitäten steht.
Bereits im November eröffnete die Ausstellung M back to m, von François Morellet (Frankreich, *1926) mit den neuesten Werken des Künstlers.
Von Februar bis Mai 2009 war erstmalig eine Ausstellung von Peter Wegner (USA, *1963) mit dem Titel P,E,T,E,R,W,E,G,N,E,R, zu sehen.
Seine in Europa noch unbekannte künstlerische Position steht in der Tradition der Konkreten Kunst, bzw. der Minimal Art. Diese wird jedoch aus der Distanz reflektiert, woraus Wegner gänzliche neue künstlerische Formulierungen entwickelt.
„Chapeau, mon ami“ von Gotthard Graubner (geboren 1930 in Erlbach im Vogtland) umfasst in der Werkauswahl die Zeitspanne von 40 Jahren. Zusammen mit dem Künstler und Ihnen, den Freunden der Galerie, Sammlern, Kuratoren, Kritikern – unseren Wegbegleitern – möchten wir am Freitag, dem 15. Mai unser 40jähriges Bestehen feiern!

Gotthard Graubner is dedicating his exhibition “Chapeau, mon ami” to the 40th anniversary of Galerie m Bochum and to its founder, his friend Alexander von Berswordt.

With unerring consistency and impressive intensity Graubner allows color to become an autonomous force in his paintings, continually taking fresh approaches to exploring its qualities and its irrational power to influence us. Released from its servitude as a mere means of representing other things, color is a fundamental pictorial element in Graubner’s works, unfolding in manifold rich nuances a fascinating inner life that goes beyond the flat surface of the canvas, radiating out to create its own color space.
In the course of his investigations, especially during the process of creating his object-like color space bodies, he becomes entangled deeper and deeper in an “adventure, [...] that never ends.”

”My pictures compose themselves in the waxing of the light [...]” Graubner places great importance on light and space in installations of his paintings. In the spacious, light-flooded rooms of Galerie m, he stages a symbiotic dialog between the pictures and the space. The color-saturated plane breathes, and the positioning of the color space bodies in turn makes the whole gallery start to breathe.

Max Imdahl called Graubner’s color spaces “sensation spaces.” Just how apt this description is can be seen plainly in the color space bodies from the 1980s to today.
The cushion paintings with their intense, contrasting color schemes elude the viewer’s rational faculties with their color-dominated brand of reality.
The inner liveliness of the painterly gesture is further heightened in these works by their volume, making them literally seem to reach out into space. Paint and ground meld to become a tangible color body, a “painterly organism.”
The foam cushion pictures covered in Perlon fabric from the 1960s and 70s are by contrast delicate pictorial objects that harbor the immaterial manifestation of colored light within. Graubner likes to call them light trampolines.

Graubner’s works interact with each other, with the space and with the viewer.
The colors pulsate and change – and the artist is still involved today in investigating the “varying effects of color layers.”

For the past 40 years, Galerie m has developed its program in close cooperation with the artists.
Founded in 1969 by Alexander von Berswordt and housed since 1972 in spacious galleries set in the grounds of Haus Weitmar, Galerie m has always set its sights on a progressive program of exhibitions. The gallery has worked closely over the years with artists such as François Morellet, Lee Ufan, Richard Serra, Arnulf Rainer and Gotthard Graubner, to whom it has been indebted since its inception.
While in the early days the focus was above all on the New Concrete Art, Susanne Breidenbach also developed an additional specialization in photography in the early1990s: artists including Lucinda Devlin, Thomas Florschuetz, Evelyn Hofer, Dirk Reinartz and Aino Kannisto can be cited in this context.
Susanne Breidenbach has been the owner of Galerie m since 2003. She devotes one of four exhibitions each year to a new artistic position, embracing extremely diverse media. In past years, works by Carla Guagliardi, Sybille Berger, Melanie Manchot, Jan Wawrzyniak and Laura Letinsky have given visitors to the gallery an exciting look at the contemporary art scene.

The gallery is celebrating the occasion 40 years of Galerie m Bochum with an exhibition trilogy, thus highlighting the art that is at the center of all its activities.
The program was kicked off in November with the exhibition M back to m, featuring the latest works by François Morellet (France, *1926).
A new artist at Galerie m, Peter Wegner (USA, *1963), will be on view from February to May 2009 with a show entitled P,E,T,E,R,W,E,G,N,E,R,. As yet unknown in Europe, Wegner’s art carries on the tradition of Concrete Art or Minimalism, but reflects these roots from a certain distance, with Wegner developing completely new artistic formulations.
“Chapeau, mon ami,” an exhibition mounted by Gotthard Graubner (born 1930 in Erlbach im Vogtland), includes works spanning 40 years. On 15 May we would then like to celebrate our anniversary together with the artist – and with you, the friends of the gallery, collectors, curators and critics – who have accompanied us through the past 40 years!
