ACA Galleries is proud to present the sensuous watercolors of Judy Chicago - an artist, feminist, humanist, educator and author whose career extends over four decades. She has had exhibitions in the United States, Europe, Asia, New Zealand and Australia. In addition to a lifetime of art making she has published 10 books.. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including several honorary doctorates.

A pioneer in the Feminist Art movement in the early seventies, Judy Chicago created the groundbreaking Feminist Art Program at California State University and later at the California Institute of the Arts. Since then, she has been expanding her unique art pedagogical practice and with her husband, photographer Donald Woodman, has recently facilitated "Envisioning the Future", a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional program in Pomona, CA, scheduled to be on exhibit at multiple sites in the Inland Empire in January and February 2004. "The Dinner Party", the most well known of the many collaborative projects she has created during her art career, is scheduled to be permanently housed at the Brooklyn Museum as part of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art. For nearly four decades, Judy Chicago has remained steadfast in her commitment to the power of art as a vehicle for intellectual transformation and social change and consequently has become a symbol for people all over the world for an expanded role for art as well as women's right to engage in the highest level of art practice.

The title of the exhibition includes a reference to Anaïs Nin’s collection of erotic stories. A feminist from the first wave, Nin was Chicago’s mentor in the Seventies. Personal friends and professional allies, both sought the goal of freedom of female expression unbound by patriarchal posturing.

In addition to the watercolor series Fragments From the Delta of Venus, Chicago has created a suite of small intaglio prints that are presented in heart shaped candy boxes, which will also be on exhibit.

A book to accompany the exhibition will be available. Entitled Fragments from the Delta of Venus, it has 20 color plates and an introduction by the artist. Text selections by Anaïs Nin, published by Powerhouse Books

Dr. Peg Brand, Professor of Philosophy and Gender Studies at Indiana University, will present an informal talk, “The Dangers of Depicting Female Sexuality” to be followed by remarks from Dr. Gail Levin.

Over the course of my career I have been repeatedly drawn to the subject of female sexuality, a subject that has been dominated by male artists and a male gaze. Female perspectives on erotica have been singularly lacking, which is one reason that I have been attracted to the challenge of creating a visual language for female sexual agency.
