Summer in the City

June 22 - September 7, 2002

ACA will present ‘Summer in the City’ - a group exhibition featuring highlights from the Gallery’s collection of 19th & 20th century and Contemporary American Art. The exhibition will reflect the gallery’s ongoing and historical commitment to American Art, synthesizing a diverse range of styles, genres and media.

‘Summer in the City’ will include important works from the gallery’s celebrated masters: Milton Avery, Romare Bearden, Arthur Dove. Philip Evergood, William Gropper, Reginald Marsh, Edward Hopper, Walt Kuhn, Charles Demuth, Maurice Prendergast, Ben Shahn, Moses & Raphael Soyer, among others.

The concurrent focus on Post War Art will spotlight contemporary figuration from Sidney Goodman - the celebrated Realist whose work embraces metaphor and the metaphysical; the vitality and fervor of Benny Andrews’ collage works; a variety of Expressionist painting, notably George McNeil’s vigorous, complex abstractions, Jon Schueler’s sensitive and beautiful canvases and the vitality of Grace Hartigan’s oils in conjunction with a range of interesting sculpture in a variety of genres and media.

Contemporary landscape by Wendy Mark, Jan Green and the breathtaking color of Richard Mayhew’s atmospheric canvases will be included in the show alongside works of social narrative, principally Faith Ringgold’s powerful ‘Story Quilts’ and Ralph Fasanella’s intricate and vibrant works, crowded with people, buildings and scenes of everyday life.

The overall result of ACA Gallery’s 70th Summer exhibit is an extraordinarily dynamic display that promises to offer something for everyone.
