Die Baukunst Galerie eröffnet am Mittwoch, dem 12. November 2008 von 18 bis 20 Uhr eine große Einzelschau mit Werken von M+M. „Keine Erziehung“ ist die zweite Ausstellung des deutschen Künstlerduos in der Galerie, dessen Name für die künstlerische Zusammenarbeit von Marc Weis (*1965) und Martin De Mattia (*1963) steht. Dr. Doris Krystof, Kuratorin am K21 Kunstsammlung NRW in Düsseldorf, wird eine Einführung in das künstlerisches Œuvre geben, das eine komplexe Synthese aus Film, Fotografie und Installation verkörpert. In der Ausstellung werden neben einer vierteiligen Videoinstallation ein „Panic Room“ mit aktuellen Fototableaus aus der Serie „in front“, Gewaltszenen aus Handyfilmen von Jugendlichen sowie ein Künstlerbuch zu sehen sein.

M+M errangen 2006 den 1. Preis im dem von der Bundesrepublik Deutschland ausgelobten Wettberwerb für „Kunst am Bau“ im Bundesministerium für Gesundheit in Bonn. Im gleichen Jahr hatten sie bereits ein Aufenthaltsstipendium an der Villa Aurora in Los Angeles erhalten. Dem war 2002 ein USA-Stipendium des Bayrischen Staates, 1998-99 ein Stipendium der Villa Massimo in Rom und 1997 die Auszeichnung mit dem Bayrischen Staatförderpreis vorangegangen. Außerdem erhielten M+M 2008 eine Gastprofessur an der Peter Behrens School of Architecture in Düsseldorf, 2001-02 eine Dozentur an der Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Zürich und ein Jahr zuvor eine Gastprofessur an der Kunstakademie in München. Die Arbeiten des Künstlerduos wurden bereits in zahlreichen nationalen und internationalen Ausstellungen präsentiert, u.a. im Italienischen Pavillon auf der Biennale in Venedig, ZKM Karlsruhe, Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Sprengelmuseum Hannover, Kunstmuseum Bern, Museum Ludwig Köln und Musée d‘ Art Contemporain Montreal.

Gedanklicher Anstoß für den Ausstellungstitel "Keine Erziehung" war für das Künstlerduo der Artikel "Schlechte Manieren" in der ZEIT vom 21.8.2008 von Slavoj Žižek. Der slowenische Philosoph und Psychoanalytiker beschreibt in diesem Aufsatz das komplizierte Netzwerk ungeschriebener Gesetze im Bereich der sozialen Interaktion. Dabei zeigt er Parallelen zwischen fehlenden Manieren in privaten Beziehungen (am Modell Onkel und Neffe) und den mangelnden Manieren der Großmächte Russland und USA in der Weltpolitik (am Beispiel des Georgien- und Irakkriegs) auf.

Diese Verbindung zwischen gesellschaftlichem Mikro- und Makrokosmos visualisieren M+M in dem ausgestellten „Panic Room“. Eine in den Ausstellungsraum hineingebaute Architektur haben die Künstler mit der 2008 in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Grafiker Felix Kempf entwickelten „Putin 04“-Zeitung tapeziert. In dieser reflektieren sie anhand von Bild- und Textfragmenten die Rede Putins zum Thema der internationalen Sicherheit, die unter anderem deshalb weltweit Aufsehen erregte, weil Putin gleich zu Beginn explizit darauf hinwies, dass er auf übertriebene Höflichkeitsformen und Diplomatie verzichten werde, um zu äußern, was er wirklich denke. Auf diese Zeitung haben die Künstler Fototableaus aus der Serie „in front“ (Lambda-Belichtung auf Endura, Maße variabel) montiert. Arbeitsprinzip ist hier die Auflösung ausgewählter Fernsehnachrichten in ihre vielen hundert und tausend fotografischen Einzelbilder. Was aus der Ferne wie eine abstrakte Matrix horizontaler Streifen wirkt, enthüllt sich in der Detailbetrachtung als Analyse der arbeitsökonomischen Mittel des Fernsehens, das auf seine elementaren Fragmente zurückgeführt wird. Darüber hinaus stellen M+M in der thematischen Auswahl der Fototablaus Verbindungen zwischen Ereignissen wie dem Amokläufer in Erfurth (2002), den Selbstmordattentätern in Pakistan (2002) und Palästina (2004) und den Randalen bei dem Fußballländerspiel Schweiz-Türkei (2005) her.

Das Ausstellungsthema wird in der Videoinstallation „Dance Köln“ 2004-08 in einer Lehrer-Schüler-Beziehung weiter durchgespielt. Auf vier Projektionswänden wird synchron die Suche eines jungen Türken in Deutschland nach persönlicher und gesellschaftlicher Identität erzählt. Ausgangspunkt hierfür war die Ausweisung des türkischen Jugendlichen Mehmet, die bundesweit für Schlagzeilen sorgte. Der Münchener Autor Andreas Neumeister entwickelte das Filmmanuskript teilweise aus dem Vokabular, das diesen Fall prägte.

Darüber hinaus haben M+M im Internet gefundenes Videomaterial zu Schlägereien von Jugendlichen zu einem Künstlerfilm und der Fotoserie „Happy Slapping“ (Lambda-Belichtung auf Endura, Maße variabel) verarbeitet. Dieser Begriff, der übersetzt „Fröhliches Zuschlagen“ bedeutet, wurde durch die intensive Berichterstattung der englischsprachigen Presse bekannt. Er steht für einen Gewalt-Trend, der vor ca. 3 Jahren von Großbritannien auf Deutschland übergriff. Dabei geht es um Körperverletzung von unbekannten Passanten, aber auch Mitschülern und Lehrern, die von den meist jugendlichen Tätern mit dem Handy oder einer Videokamera gefilmt und im Internet veröffentlicht oder per Mobiltelefon verbreitet wird.

Einen Einblick in den privaten Kosmos der Postpubertät Jugendlicher bieten M+M auch in dem präsentierten Künstlerbuch „Pie Bible“. Mit diesem an Bibelausgaben und Gesangbüchern orientierten, in Faksimile-Manier mit individuellen Gebrauchsspuren gedruckten erotischen Kompendium lassen M+M ein fiktives Buch aus dem amerikanischen Film „American Pie“ Realität werden: die im Spielfilm von einer Schülergeneration an die nächste weitergegebene Sammlung an Erfahrungen und Tipps in Sachen Liebe und Sexualität. Das Künstlerduo bat ausgewählte Künstlerinnen und Künstler, persönliche Erlebnisse, raffinierte Sexualtechniken und erotische Phantasien möglichst unmittelbar und direkt zu offenbaren. Die veröffentlichten Beiträge reichen dabei von Texten bis zu Collagen, Zeichnungen oder Fotos.

The Baukunst Galerie opens on Wednesday, the 12th of November 2008 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. a large solo-exhibition with works of M+M. “No Education“ is the second exhibition of the German artist duo, whose name stands for the artistic cooperation of Marc Weis (*1965) and Martin De Mattia (*1963). Dr. Doris Krystof, curator at the K21 Kunstsammlung NRW in Düsseldorf, will give an introduction in their artistic œuvre, which embodies a complex synthesis of film, photography and installation. Beside a four channel video installation a “Panic Room“ with current photo tableaus from the series “in front“, violent sequences of mobile phone movies of teenagers and an artist book will be presented.

In 2006 M+M gained the 1st Prize in the competition of the Federal Republic of Germany for “Art and Architecture” at the Federal Ministry of Health in Bonn. In the same year they had already received an “artists in residence“-scholarship at the Villa Aurora, Los Angeles. This had been preceded by an USA-scholarship of the Bavarian State in 2002, a scholarship of the Villa Massimo in Rome and a grant through the Bavarian Council in 1997. Furthermore in 2008 M+M received a visiting professorship at the Behrens School of Architecture in Düsseldorf, in 2001-02 a teaching position at the Hochschule für Gestaltung und Kunst in Zurich and one year before a guest professorship at the Academy of Arts in Munich. The works of the artist duo were already presented in several major national and international exhibitions, amongst others in the Italian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale, the ZKM Karlsruhe, the Pergamon Museum Berlin, the Sprengelmuseum Hannover, the Kunstmuseum Bern, the Museum Ludwig Cologne and the Musée d’Art Contemporain Montreal.

M+M’s mental impetus of the exhibition title “No Education” was the article “Schlechte Manieren” (bad manners) of Slavoj Žižek in the ZEIT from the 21st of August 2008. The Slovenian philosopher and psychoanalyst describes in his essay the complex network of unwritten rules in the field of social interaction. Thereby he points out parallels between missing manners in private relationships (exemplified at the model uncle and nephew) and lacking manners of the super powers Russia and USA in international politics (exemplified at the wars in Georgia and the Iraq).

The artist duo visualizes this interconnection of social micro- and macrocosm at the exhibited ”Panic Room“. The walls of this separate architecture in the exhibition space are covered with a newspaper about “Putin 04”, which M+M developed in cooperation with the designer Felix Kempf. Images and text fragments reflect upon the speech of Putin about international security, which gained worldwide attention because of his introduction, that he will explicitly avoid polite forms and diplomatic terms in order to say what he really thinks. On this newspaper photo tableaus from the series ”in front“ (Lambda-exposure on Endura, various dimensions) are mounted. The working principle is the dissolution of selected television broadcasts in its hundreds and thousands of individual photographic frames. From the distance the series looks like an abstract matrix of horizontal stripes, but on closer inspection it turns out to be an analysis of the economic working media of television, which is traced back to its elemental fragments. Besides, M+M establish a connection by the thematic selection of the photo tableaus between the person running amok in Erfurth (2002), the suicide attacker in Pakistan (2002) and Palestine (2004) and the riots at the international soccer match between Switzerland and Turkey (2005).

The subject of the exhibition is also acted out in the relationship between a teacher and his pupil in the video installation “Dance Köln“ (2004-08). The search for personal and social identity of a young Turkish boy in Germany is synchronously staged on four projection walls. Initial point of this work was the banishment of the Turkish teenager Mehmet, which provoked nationwide banner headlines. The Munich author Andreas Neumeister partially developed the script for the film from the vocabulary, which characterized this case.

Moreover M+M reprocessed video material of juvenile brawls, which they found in the world wide web, in an artist film and the photographic series ”Happy Slapping“ (Lambda-exposure on Endura, various dimensions). The term “Happy Slapping” became generally known by the intensive coverage of the English press. It refers to a violent trend, which encroached from Great Britain on Germany about three years ago. It stands for the assaults of unknown pedestrians, but also schoolmates and teachers, which is filmed by the – for the most part – juvenile delinquents by cell or camera and published in the internet or distributed by mobile phones.

An insight into the private cosmos of the post puberty of teenagers is also provided by M+M’s artist book “Pie Bible“. This erotic compendium is geared to holy bibles and hymnals and is printed in the manner of facsimiles with individual traces of use. Here M+M bring a fictive book of the American movie “American Pie” into being: the collection of experiences and tips in love and sexuality, which is forwarded from one high school generation to the other. Therefore the artist duo asked selected artist to unveil their private experiences, elaborate sexual techniques and erotic fantasies as intuitive and direct as possible. The published contributions range from texts to collages, drawings and photos.
