DAVID SALLE: NEW WORK
BILLY SULLIVAN: ASPEN PORTRAIT
Opening Reception Saturday, 31 July, 6-8 pm
The Baldwin Gallery is pleased to present new paintings by internationally acclaimed artist David Salle. Born in 1952, Salle earned his MFA at the California Institute of the Arts and moved to New York City, where he established his reputation during the 1980s. He is recognized for his role in revitalizing representational art with a post-modern twist. Typical of Salle's style are his detached use of imagery and techniques referencing Old Master and modernist works, and the layering of apparently unrelated images (sometimes erotic female figures) to create complex compositions. The new show will present several triptychs featuring disparate imagery such as glass bottles, female figures, lemon trees, cheesecake, and fish, juxtaposed into unusual combinations.
Salle’s eclectic paintings often consist of several smaller canvases which are combined into an overall arrangement. Using both painting and collage techniques, the large works merge figuration and abstraction. The contemporary practice of image appropriation influences both the form and content of his paintings. Dramatic images appropriated from various sources, including his own black-and-white photographs, eighteenth through twentieth century French and American painting, print advertising from the fifties, and “how to draw” manuals, appear in his canvases. In 1999 the Stedlijk Museum in Amsterdam organized a solo exhibition of Salle’s work which traveled to Vienna, Austria; Turin, Italy; and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Salle is also a sculptor, photographer, stage designer, and film director.
The Baldwin Gallery will also be showing pastel drawings and paintings by New York artist Billy Sullivan. Known for his skilled portraiture, Sullivan has captured the unique personalities of numerous individuals in his pastels, oil paintings and ink drawings. Born in 1946, the artist studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He was included in Art Forum’s “Top Ten of the Nineties” survey, published in 1999.
Sullivan views his work as a diary, describing the glamorous world of interesting people and beautiful places that surround him. He transcends traditional portraiture with psychologically ambiguous and idealized representations. His still lifes capture the inherent beauty of everyday objects, while the portraits offer an intimate glimpse into the lives of his subjects.
The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception on July 31st from 6-8 pm.
Since 1994, the Baldwin Gallery has been presenting new work by established and emerging artists. It has earned an international reputation as an important venue for contemporary art, with a particular focus on American artists.
