Over fourteen paintings and painted objects by Robert Baribeau will be on exhibition at the Allan Stone Gallery in a show entitled: Field Paintings, Still Lifes, and Objects from June 17 through July 23, 2004.

Baribeau mixes media from paint to plastic sheeting to fabric, and makes sophisticated use of color and complexity of color in his work. He establishes a careful balance of zestful energy and restraint.

In addition to large explosive abstract paintings, the exhibition also includes abstractly painted cigar boxes, and smaller paintings of solitary flowers and cups that capture Baribeau’s Abstract Expressionist energy in a still-life format.

Baribeau is a disciple of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, and has remained true to this path. He is continually resourceful in creating new avenues of expression both in three-dimensional objects and in paintings. By allowing the natural impulse of his materials to spot, drip and smudge, Baribeau paints raw, tactile surfaces that are a feast of juicy strokes, stripes, polka dots, and other collaged textures and patterns.

Robert Baribeau’s work has been shown at the Neuberger Museum in Purchase, New York; the Portland Museum in Oregon; the Portland State University Museum in Oregon; and the Art and Architecture Gallery at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Robert Baribeau was born in Oregon in 1949. He has been represented by the Allan Stone Gallery since 1979. Baribeau received his BS from Portland State University in 1978, and his MFA from the Pratt Institute in 1979. His grants and honors include a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, a National Endowment for the Arts Grant, a Pratt Institute Art Department Grant/Fellowship, and a Florence Saltzman-Heidel Foundation Grant. Baribeau currently teaches at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon.
