Showcasing both established and emerging artists, TORCH gallery is proud to present its first German exhibition under the new management of Mo van der Have, son of the late Adriaan van der Have. TORCH Presents opens on Friday, 4th of September 2009 from 6 pm to 10 pm at the Temporary Gallery Cologne, showing works by Danielle Kwaaitaal, Loretta Lux, Anton Corbijn, Susan Anderson, Terry Rodgers and Eelco Brand. The exhibition will run until Saturday, 3rd of October 2009.
TORCH Presents is a dual exposition featuring a solo show of Dutch photographer Danielle Kwaaitaal and a group show with works by Loretta Lux, Susan Anderson, Terry Rodgers, Anton Corbijn and Eelco Brand.
Having had solo exhibitions in Amsterdam, London, Tokyo and Turin, Danielle Kwaaitaal now presents her photographs to Cologne. Her solo exhibition will be focused on the series 'Whispering Waters' which was recently shown in the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands. It consists of digitally edited images of women submerged in water, who wear 'underwater dresses' designed by fashion designer Mada van Gaans. Her work focuses on the complexities of female beauty and tries to discover a new aesthetic that stems from within the subject - in this case being fashion models and synchronized swimmers. Kwaaitaal feels modern fashion photography is fixed on objectification and superficial beauty so she searches for new ways of representing women. This search results in an enigmatic, almost sculptural abstraction of the human form, while still showing a sensual woman.
Being a pioneer in the fields of digital editing and veejaying, Kwaaitaal is able to translate this new aesthetic into both moving and still images. She represents a generation of artists that embrace the possibilities of modern techniques to achieve effects beyond the scope of painting. In fact, all featured artists use photography and image editing to achieve a highly individual style, forgoing the assumed uniformity of these media. Ranging from the eerie portraits of child beauty pageants by Susan Anderson and the brazen world of decadence depicted by Terry Rodgers to the completely digitalized landscapes of Eelco Brand, TORCH Presents offers a full spectrum of photographic possibilities.
