KIRSTEN EVERBERG

3. April – 1. May 2004
Opening reception: Saturday, 3. April 2004

1301PE is pleased to present the first one-person exhibition by Kirsten Everberg. The exhibition will present three paintings from rooms in the White House; the State Rooms (the Red Room, the Green Room, the Blue Room).

In 2002, Kirsten Everberg began a series of paintings based on two films by Alfred Hitchcock, North by Northwest and Marnie. Her interest was in the language and structure of composing formal and narrative elements in a box-like space. These paintings used his highly constructed and stylized spaces as empty containers for the viewer to occupy. These paintings led to the body of work of rooms in the White House; the State Rooms (the Red Room, the Green Room, the Blue Room, the Queens Bedroom, and the State Dinning Room). Everberg carries the ideas of Hitchcock’s directed and controlled spaces into the White House. Where each room is carefully directed and controlled in order to create a similar effect, each object chosen to resonate with a specific meaning while creating historical “meaning” along the way. These rooms which are assembled and reassembled with each presidential administration trying to create style and taste, the selling of a national identity.

Kirsten Everberg was born in Los Angeles, CA and studied at the University of California Los Angeles, California. She lives and works in Los Angeles and London.
