Chinese artist Zhang Peng’s photographs look like stills from fantasy animation films; they are in fact documents of elaborate sets featuring little girls. Originally trained as a painter, Zhang approaches his compositions with a heightened sense of drama, using intense colours, theatrical props, and obscure angles of perspective to create a sense of artifice and illusion from reality. His "Red" series of large horizontal photographs that feature a single young Chinese girl as subject are particularly famous, and "Red No. 1" here leads the series with an arresting image of a young girl appearing peacefully asleep on a red velvet couch and room dressed as if for baptism or a wedding. These doll-like images of Zhang's oeuvre are brilliant, as their context, mannerisms and dress are surreal and exaggerated. These works are precious and brilliant visual tableaux that have made the artist an international sensation, even at his young age.

Already a permanent acquisition of The Saatchi Collection, UK, his photographs have been shown in select exhibitions such as "Narrative, Fantasy, Future – Exhibition of Post–70’s New Art", Tang Contemporary Art, Bangkok, Thailand, ARTSingapore, SHContemporary, Art Cologne Beijing; "Beyond Foreordination" - Contemporary Photographic Group Exhibition, Beijing and Singapore; The Beijing International Triennium and many more. He is represented by the top galleries in China, Europe, The U.K. and the U.S.

The artist graduated from the Wu Zuo Ren Art Secondary School in 2001 and in 2005 he graduated from the Oil Painting Department, Central Academy of Fine Art. The artist currently lives and works in Beijing, China.
