Internationally acclaimed for his vast series of bubble performances, Chinese artist Zhu Ming (born in 1972) deals with the passage of time, extreme physical conditions, social isolation, and futility in the efforts of communication. Here in “March 9, 2003” Ming Captures such a performance where he paints with traditional Chinese ink inside a bubble, which almost instantly disappears from the paper due to the atmosphere within his transparent confines. He sits inside, body covered with fluorescent paint, while the bubble gradually fills with water, giving a sense of escaping time and opportunity. Here, he addresses rebellion and tradition in his art through the ephemeral quality of his performances, and the unnatural invisible constraints and fragile divisions of Chinese society. His bizarre bubbles create an alternative space between the inner and natural world. This work is unframed, in excellent condition.

Zhu Ming lived and participated in the Beijing East Village experimental societies in the 1990’s, and participated in group performances produced, despite the rigid social conformity of the era. Ming’s list of awards include Sharjah International Biennial 6th, Contemporary Art Prize, and the United Arab Emirates Overseas Exchange Prize of Inward Gazes: Documentaries of Chinese Performance Arts. The artist has been included in large projects by the Tate Museum and Ullens Project, and has had international exhibitions at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, the Modern art Museum of Korea, China National Art Gallery in Beijing, and China Modern Art Commemoration Exhibition in Berlin, Germany. Zhu Ming currently works and lives in Beijing, China.
