Lot description
Zhou Chunya was born in 1955 in Chongqing in China’s Sichuan province.  Although he is considered one of the country’s most talented nature and rural scene painters, Chunya is best known on the contemporary scene for his colorful "green dog" series of paintings.  Zhou Chunya graduated from the Department of Oil Painting of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1982. Zhou also traveled to Germany and graduated from the Fine Arts College of Kassel University.

Zhou's “Green Dog” works are widely recognized as one of the iconic images of Contemporary Chinese Art.  His work has been shown at "The Documentary Exhibition of Chinese Contemporary Art" (Beijing, 1991), "China's New Art - Post ‘89" (Hong Kong, 1993), The Shanghai Biennial (1996) and was awarded a solo show in the 2010 ARCO exhibition on Madrid.  His works can be found in many collections including the Chaney Family Collection and the public collection of the Austria Linz Art Museum. In 2010, the artist was given his first retrospective in Shanghai Art Museum and also founded his new studio in Shanghai. Also in 2010, he was named one of "Martell's 2010 Artists of the Year".
