Lot description
Zhong Biao is unquestionably one of the most famous post-Modern artists working today, and defined the Contemporary Realist movement in China. Biao’s "Private Life" is a visually dynamic example of what has made Zhong one of the greatest influences on the younger generations of Chinese representational painters. Western and Eastern commercial influences interplay with traditional China in the architecture, advertisements, furniture, and ghostly parental figures in the background. Here, real conflicting human emotions of disconnect as well as common experiences of life are reflected in Zhong’s realistically rendered “fantasy-scape” scenes. This print is loose and is in excellent condition.

Zhong paints figures in black and white to denote a temporality of passing life and the transition from one generation to the next. He explains that “…they will eventually leave the world and become the past.” In contrast, he renders the buildings, logos, and emblems in vibrant color to highlight the dichotomy of how these things may often continue to exist beyond the people who created them.

The artist received his formal training 1987 at The Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now China Academy of Fine Arts), Hangzhou, China. Zhong Biao has exhibited widely throughout U.S, including San Francisco, Aspen, New York, Miami, and Chicago. He has also had select solo and group exhibitions in The U.K., Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, France, Japan, Thailand, Singapore, South Korea and China, and his paintings have fetched recent auction sales beyond 6 figures.
