Lot description
Contemporary Chinese artist Zhang Shipei (China, b. 1942) is renowned for painting deft whimsical images of every-day life in China. His most famous works are his ink brush and watercolor on paper paintings, which are skilfully gestural with light hearted often humorous overtones. In “Music in Winter”, Shipei animates life from the cold barren season with sweeping branches swaying to the sound and a cat roused and inquisitive. Here, the rapid brushwork and figural abstraction conveys hints of the forms, emphasizing the harmonious overtones and emotional stirring. This theme along, housewives in the midst of chores, families dining, and landscapes along the village riversides in South China is archetypical of Sheipei’s delicate works.

This work is in perfect condition measures 26.77 x 17.72 inches is professionally framed to 35.43 x 25.98 inches, and is accompanied by a formal certificate of authentication. Zhang Shipei was born in Guangdong and graduated the Guangzhou Fine Art Academy in 1968. The artist presently lives and works in China.
