"China Red in Blue" (2011) by rising star, Chinese Contemporary artist Zhang Lin, is a stunning, large-scale oil painting that belongs to the artist's internationally acclaimed "China Red" Series. This painting is particularly notable, as it is the only painting in the Series where blue, is the predominate color, referring to the demeanor of the young woman as much as to her dress. Zhang paints his subjects as far more than just pretty portraits, but as physical metaphors; young women torn between past and present, reality and fantasy. This young woman wears her hair, makeup and jewellery in a conservative manner, with this old-world sensibility echoed in the traditional pattern of her blue corset and vintage cigarette holder. However, her body language and dress contradicts this traditional sentiment, wearing a short metallic skirt and bare midriff, her sensual glance over her shoulder underscores her confidence, casually biting down on the cigarette holder as she smokes with pleasure.

Zhang Lin (B. 1979) is one of the leading artists of the 80's Generation in China. In 2007, he graduated with a Master Degree in Fine Arts, Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, Chongqing, China. Zhang's paintings have been exhibited throughout Europe and Asia at galleries, museums and art fairs. Recent Museum shows include 2011: "Trojan: New Chinese Painting", the Beijing Times Art Museum, China, 2010: "Invitational Exhibition for Sichuan Fine Arts Academy's 70th Anniversary", Chongqing Art Museum, China and 2007: "Potential", Chengdu Arts Museum, China amongst many more. The artist lives and works in Beijing, China.
