‘Shun No. 13’ is an exquisite example of Zhang Huan’s incredibly thought provoking style, executed in this unique woodcut print. He works with the intricacy of the grains, allowing the natural patterns within the wood to add subtle texture and nuances to his figures. From the delicate and translucent looking dragonfly wings to the shaded contours of his figure’s skin, Zhang Huan creates a beautiful work of quiet reflection on the transience of life.

Through photography, sculpture, performance art, painting, and prints, Zhang Huan (B. 1965, Anyang, China) is known for his pivotal works which often employ his own body in painful practices to discuss moral, political, and ethical situations in Communist China. Whether laying naked on a block of ice or covering himself in honey and flies, the artist employs meditation in order to overcome the performance rituals he executes in the name of art. Pushing the boundaries of the artistic approach, Zhang Huan tries to discover the threshold at which the spiritual manifests itself through the physical. With Buddhist philosophy and practices at the core of his work, the artist is also known for stunning sculptures and paintings created from the ash of burnt incense found in temples. Collectively, Zhang Huan’s art reinforces the inter connectivity between shared human experiences and the complex lexicon found through enlightenment and suffering.
