Lot description
Monumental in scale (63 x 78.70 inches/160 x 200 cm) this painting belongs to the iconic "Anti-Vice Raid Campaign Series" and is a tour-de-force work by Chinese Contemporary artist Zhang Haiying. The visual focus is on the sensual image of an anonymous young woman at center wearing only delicate, golden-colored lingerie as she hides her face from view. This painting intentionally captures a specific moment in time, when a bright flash of a camera has suddenly gone off in this otherwise darkened room, and the instant reaction of this woman discovered in a private moment, who is taken aback by the unexpected intrusion. The room is suddenly illuminated, as is the porcelain skin of her exposed neck, arms, legs and back. The artist uses deft, broad sweeping brush-strokes, for which he is famous, to underscore the sudden movement of her body and dark hair worn in a pony-tail, that is balanced by great attention to detail and delicate touches. This work is unframed and in excellent condition.

Despite the fact that this painting depicts a Chinese police raid on a brothel, the woman here possesses an unspoken grace and innocence. Zhang aims to be non-judgmental, to capture a socio-political moment in time, yet there is an undeniable pathos and empathy felt towards this young woman, whose 'virginal' milk-white skin underscores her inherently desirable yet denigrated beauty. The Series directly addresses the Chinese government's agenda to eradicate prostitution and strip clubs throughout all major cities in China. Consisting of appropriated imagery from strip club and brothels, Zhang's Series documents these very public and abusive raids by Chinese police.

His paintings are exhibited throughout Asian, Europe, U.K. with the U.S market becoming aware of his world-wide appeal and rising fame as one of China's new faces of Contemporary Art. The artist lives and works in Beijing, China.
