This monumental oil painting by Contemporary Chinese artist Zhang Haiying depicts several beautiful young Chinese women, whom all gather together huddled on a long couch, scantily dressed in seductive lingerie, short skirts, black boots and high heels. All of these women intentionally cover their faces with their long, dark hair and hide their identity by turning away from the viewer, heightening the sense of voyeurism and elements of reveal/conceal. The work is painted in the grey-scale to intentionally imitate a black and white photograph, and dramatically lit to imitate the flash of a camera, highlighting the porcelain skin and silken lingerie of these women in dramatic contrast to their dark hair and accessories. Zhang is famous for painting in confident, sweeping, brush-strokes that capture movement that are balanced by his delicate hand and a great attention to details of dress and demeanor of his subjects. This work measures 78.74 x 118.11 inches (200 x 300 cm) unframed, and can be shipped rolled off of the stretchers for ease, affordability and safety of transport.

This museum-level painting comes from Zhang's famed "Anti-Vice Campaign" series, which was recently on view at the Saatchi Collection, London, UK. The series directly addresses the Chinese government's agenda to eradicate prostitution throughout major cities in China. Consisting of appropriated prostitute and pornographic imagery, the series directly relates to the very public raids on brothels and strip clubs by the Chinese police. The series aims to be non-judgmental, and instead simply works to capture a moment in time.

Zhang Haiying (B. 1972) is a contemporary Chinese artist whose work addresses issues of power and vulnerability and investigates perceptions of emotional discord and disillusionment. His vividly captivating works hint at a complex narrative filled with notions of desperation, entrapment, and abuse that conveys the human condition through both victim and oppressor. The artist has exhibited at numerous locations internationally including the Saatchi Gallery (London, UK), Willem Kerseboom Gallery (Amsterdam, NL), and Sovereign Asia Art Foundation (Hong-Kong, CN), among numerous others.
