Lot description
This magnificent, realist oil painting is a tour-de-force by Contemporary Chinese artist Zhang Haiying (b. 1972, China) and belongs to the artist's famed "Anti-Vice Raid Campaign" Series, which was exhibited at The Saatchi Collection, London, UK in 2008. Three young Chinese women stand together in the middle of a darkened space, their backs to the viewer, each wearing a fitted long glamorous, sorbet-colored silk gown with fabric pooling at their feet, and long dark hair worn loose and cascading over their backs and shoulders. Their porcelain skin and gowns are in luminous contrast to the darkness that surrounds them. We long to see the faces and identities of these women, who possess an unspoken elegance and sexuality. Zhang paints them standing in a composition that intentionally references the famous pose of "The Three Graces" which hails back to first century A.D. Pompeiian wall paintings, a pose that heightens the intensity and message of the painting, considering that in the eyes of the Chinese government, these women have in fact 'fallen from grace' as they are prostitutes from one of the many brothels or strip clubs in the major cities of China, depicted here at the moment when Chinese police are just raiding the room, catching the women off-guard and leaving them with nowhere to hide from the sudden glare of flashlights and cameras.

Zhang's paintings appropriate imagery from actual photographs taken by the Chinese police and the urgency that these women feel to conceal their faces from the cameras is expressed in Zhang's iconic wide sweeping brush-strokes of black and white paint that depicts quick movement of hair and body. These abstracted details are balanced by Zhang's quiet and intricate attention to the luminosity, colors, patterns, and delicate details the women's dresses, that serve to underscore the inherently desirable yet denigrated beauty of his female subjects. The artist's compositions and painterly style reference both traditional Chinese ink brush painting as well as the thematic style of artists such as Edgar Degas and John Singer-Sargent.

Zhang Haiying (B. 1972) is a Contemporary Chinese artist internationally famed for his large-scale "social-realist paintings", that explore devices of propaganda for non-political means. The artist has exhibited at prestigious Museum and Gallery shows internationally and his sought after on the primary and secondary market, world-wide, including The Saatchi Gallery "The Revolution Continues-New Chinese Art", (London, UK), Willem Kerseboom Gallery (Amsterdam, NL), and Sovereign Asia Art Foundation (Hong Kong), amongst numerous others. His paintings are exhibited throughout Asian, Europe, U.K. with the U.S market becoming aware of his world-wide appeal and rising fame as one of China's new faces of Contemporary Art.
