"Heart, No. 71" (2011) belongs to the ongoing 'Heart' series of small-scale figurative oil paintings by emerging Chinese artist Zeng Pu, begun in 2009. This seductive portrait depicts a beautiful young woman wearing brilliant red hot-pants, a literal reference to China as well as sexuality, and a tight white shirt. Her unabashedly sexual pose is balanced by her innocent, doe-eyed facial expression and perceived naiveté. The small-scale of this work recalls images from magazines or personal photographs, allowing the work to be more familiar and palpable-- if this was painted at a larger scale the color and compositions would become too visually intense. As is typical of Zeng's famous "Heart Series", here Zeng paints a young woman against a blank white background, out of context, further transforming her into an apparition, as if a snapshot from a dream or fantasy. Zeng's gestural and fluid use of oil paint intentionally blurs all details so that when viewed up-close she becomes nearly abstracted, yet when viewed at a distance, the dynamism and sexuality of this portrait resonate.

Zeng Pu (B. 1982 Born: Xichang, Sichuan, China) has already been the subject of an impressive roster of Museums including the Duolun Art Museum, Shanghai, China, The Macao Museum, The Nanjing Museum, and The Sichuan Art Museum amongst others. He graduated in 2004 from the Chengdu Fine Art Academy of Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Sichuan, China with an Undergraduate Degree in Painting and in 2007 graduated from Chengdu Fine Art Academy of Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Sichuan, China with an Advanced Degree Oil Painting. He currently lives and works in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. In 2011 his Heart Series paintings were part of the“New Stars Art Festival”, Touring Museum Exhibition that traveled to Changsha, Shenzhen and Shanghai, China and his solo exhibition “Zeng Pu” held at The China International Gallery Expo (CIGE). Beijing, China also in 2011 was met with critical acclaim.
